Why is it important to understand a culture when learning its language? When learning a new language, it's important to also have knowledge of the culture behind that language. This allows for context when speaking. If I travel to a country that speaks Spanish, I have to be able to communicate with people there. I may be a master of Spanish, but that means nothing if I don't know the customs and life in that country. I could know how to order food in Spanish, but that's not very helpful if I don't even know what food is being served. In order to speak in Spanish, I also need to know what I'm talking about.
How has the examination of the themes and lyrics in “Latinoamérica” helped you to develop a deeper understanding of your own culture?Studying the themes and lyrics behind “Latinoamérica” allowed me to develop an understanding of my own culture. Primarily, I gained an understanding of what makes a culture. Previously, I regarded my culture as the people and things I do in my life. However, “Latinoamérica” made me realize that there is much more than that. The lyrics in the song depict the narrator's culture as the land and civilization he is a part of. He defines his culture as the groups and environment he is a part of. The planet is my culture. The mountains that make up the spine of the Earth are my culture. My culture is not simply the things that I do and the people I do them with. It is the land I tread, and the universe that makes my life possible.
