Model Senate was a class in which students imitated the United States senate, acting out real senators and roles. Committees were formed for three topics, climate change, college debt, and immigration. Additionally, committee members drafted bills for these topics corresponding to the party and viewpoints of the person they were representing. One bill for each committee was selected to be ammended and voted upon in committee. Any bill passed through committee appared at final exhibition on the senate floor for final voting.
I was given the role of minority whip, representing Richard Durbin from Illinois. I was tasked with persuading senators from both parties to support bills and ammendements that aligned with my party's wants. As minority whip, I did not write any legislation. Instead, I researched the wants of my party, what we were against, and possible compromises I could make. This would later aid me in garnering support for bills that my party wanted to pass. During the senate floor, I was expected to deliver one speech for every bill that made it out of committee, persuading people to support or vote against.
